Multilevel Approaches to Understanding Health: a few models to explore

Here are a few resources for different kids of models.

Social Ecological Model (SEM): Here are 2 examples of SEM applied by the Centers for Disease Control to cervical cancer and to violence prevention. I like this visual model. https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/overview/social-ecologicalmodel.html

Biopsychosocial Model (BSM): I am thinking about applying this model to an exploration of opioid abuse, so I have found a couple of articles that apply the model to substance abuse. It seems to work well for addictions and mental health particularly well.

  1. A BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL MODEL OF SOCIAL ANXIETY AND SUBSTANCE USE

2. Adherence Monitoring with Chronic Opioid Therapy for Persistent Pain: A Biopsychosocial Spiritual Approach to Mitigate Risk

World Health Organization conceptual framework: A 79 page overview of a 'Conceptual Framework for Action on the Social Determinants of Health.' Skip to page 6 for visual. It is extremely complex, but then so are complex health issues. Difficult to apply in a concise way.

Health Belief Model (HBM): This website gives a good overview of this model. The model explains and predicts health behaviors. It operates on the assumption that a person will take individual action regarding their health. Interesting!
